Texas Juvenile Law

Underage drinking, drug experimentation, various criminal offenses- we never think that our child would take part in any of these activities, but by today’s society too often the unimaginable becomes a reality.   Texas law recognizes juveniles as between the ages of 10-17 and these cases are handled in special Juvenile courts throughout the state.

Kahn & Harrison

The terminology for juveniles is a little different from adults.  Juveniles are found to have “engaged in delinquent conduct rather than found guilty of a crime.  Juveniles are not release on bond as adults are but are held in detention until a judge feels that the juvenile will behave correctly, will not be a danger to society and will return to court as required.

The criminal defense lawyers at Kahn & Harrison have represented numerous juveniles charged with various crimes including:

  • Drug possession
  • Assault & Aggravated Assault
  • Criminal mischief
  • Underage drinking and DWI
  • Unauthorized use of a motor vehicle
  • Robbery
  • Arson
  • Burglary
  • Sex crimes

If your child has committed one of these acts, they aren’t just facing punishment from the juvenile justice system, but they could be exposed to society imposed penalties such as:  denial of employment, denial of financial aid or scholarships, ineligibility for military benefits and problems obtaining their driver’s license.

As always, we will be fighting to get the case dismissed. However, sometimes that is not possible.  There are several option available to us depending on the seriousness of the crime including trial, deferred prosecution (where the case will be dismissed after 6 months of your child does not get in any further trouble), probation (where the child will get to go home with the parents and have to meet with a probation officer and perform community service), boot camp or drug treatment (where the child will spend several weeks or months away receiving treatment) or time at the Texas Youth Commission (where the child will spend several months learning the hard way how to make better decisions as an adult).

At Kahn & Harrison, we’ll provide the very best legal representation for your child, and look after their legal interests. We’ll also work to get your child’s records sealed, and prevent the indiscretions of their youth from causing additional problems for them in their future.  We take steps within the allotted time frame to  get these records expunged, making them inaccessible to schools, future employers, scholarship committees, and military recruiters.

Don’t let these issues endanger your child’s future, call the attorneys at Kahn & Harrison today.
